The association Bodegas Familiares de Rioja is a non-profit winemaking association, founded in April 1991, chartered, created with the name of PROVIR, Spanish for Riojan Wine producers. It currently comprises more than 40 family-run wineries, hence its current name: Bodegas Familiares de Rioja. All wineries have their own vineyards: together totalling more than 3,500 hectares representing the social interests of around 70% of all small and medium-sized wineries in Rioja. It is also characteriSed by the perfect blend between the youth of the management team of each winery and the experience of earlier generations. The yearly wine production of all associated SMEs can reach values around 16 million liters of which at least 26% is exported to the UK, Germany, Scandinavian countries, Switzerland and USA.
PROVIR is the only association in Rioja made up entirely of wineries with their own vineyards and represents the Spanish family-run winery in the CEVI – European Confederation of Independent Winegrowers, which gathers 8,000 independent winegrowers in Europe from other EU associations: Portugal (FENAVI), France (VigneronsIndépendants de France), Luxembourg (OPVI), Switzerland (ASVE), Slovenia (FES), Hungary (Vindependent) and Italy (FIVI).
